Midweek Update: Warriors sweep Panama Holiday Festival

McALESTER — The Haileyville Warriors and Lady Warriors spent the weekend at the Panama Holiday Festival. Find out how they did, plus when every team next plays.

Canadian:

Canadian’s season continues Monday with a trip to Haileyville. The Cougars are 7-2 this season, and the Lady Cougars are 1-9.

Crowder:

Crowder basketball heads to Quinton to begin the 2014 portion of its schedule Tuesday. The Demons went 3-7 in 2013, and the Demonettes went 2-9.

Haileyville:

The Lady Warriors lost both their games in the Panama Holiday Festival, falling 72-50 to Acorn, Ark., on Saturday and 61-35 to Panama on Monday. Tori Cole led the Lady Warriors in both games, knocking down a combined 14 3-pointers and scoring 58 points in the two games.

“The game was never in doubt, and (Acorn’s coach) let her score her points,” Haileyville coach Jody Hull said of Cole on Tuesday.

“If they leave her open, she can hit them.”

Though the losses dropped the Lady Warriors to 1-6, Hull said his team shot well at the free throw line, going a combined 13-for-17 against Panama.  Hull also called both opposing coaches “classy” for regularly subbing in reserves to try to keep the score from getting out of hand.

“They were just so much bigger and stronger than our kids,” Hull said.

“I can’t get mad at them when we’re outclassed but they’re still trying.”

The Warriors, meanwhile, swept Acorn and Panama to finish 2013 with a 5-3 record. Haileyville beat Acorn 65-60 on Saturday and Panama 62-48 on Monday.

“We were down 29-19 at halftime, and we went on a 20-0 run in the third quarter,” Hull said of the Acorn game.

“In the third quarter we came out and went to our half-court trap and it was very effective. We got a lot of steals and hit five 3-pointers.”

Tristan Tiger scored 24 points for Haileyville against Acorn. Jason Mayo scored 15, Seth Davison scored 11, James Hart scored 8 and hit two key free throws in the final minute of the game.
