Myers on top in District 3 race; Crowder school bond passes

McALESTER — Democratic candidate Trent Myers has won the race to elect a new District 3 Pittsburg County commissioner, defeating Republican candidate Miles Cathey by 100 votes, according to unofficial election results.

Myers received 484 votes, while Cathey received 384, according to preliminary vote results at the Pittsburg County Election Board office on Tuesday night.

In the other race on the ballot, voters in the Crowder School District passed a school bond issue.

The measure passed with 145 “yes” votes, while 69 “no” votes were cast. School bond issues in Oklahoma require 60 percent of the vote to pass, and the 145 “yes” votes proved enough to pass the measure by 67 percent of the total votes cast.

In the District 3 race, Myers and Cathey were vying for the right to fill the office left vacant by the death of the late Ronnie Young. Law enforcement officers have said his death is under investigation.

Myers is director of the McAlester/Pittsburg County Office of Emergency Management.

Cathey is an employee of District 3.

Results are not set to become official until 5 p.m. on Friday.
