UPDATE: One killed in wreck; US 69 traffic still slowed

McALESTER — Traffic continues to move slowly along U.S. Highway 69 south of McAlester following a two-vehicle fatality accident this morning near Savanna.

Lt. Randy Rogers reported the wreck involved two vehicles, a UPS semi truck pulling two trailers and a pickup truck with a Pittsburg County license plate. Rogers reported one fatality from the accident, but said the victim’s name was being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The UPS truck’s trailer caught fire in the collision, Rogers said.

Witnesses have reported seeing and hearing explosions at the site of the wreck.

One southbound lane of the highway was closed this morning before 7 a.m. At 9:53 a.m., OHP reported  traffic was moving slowly along the highway at the site of the collision, about four miles south of Savanna.

The patrol said the southbound lane of U.S. Highway would remain closed for an undetermined amount of time so that debris from the wreckage could be cleared.

At the scene are the McAlester Fire Department, McAlester Army Ammunition Fire Department, Oklahoma Highway Patrol, Pittsburg County Sheriff’s Department and some police officers from Kiowa.
