Tornado warning and severe storm hit McAlester

McALESTER — Storm warning sirens were sounded as severe weather hit McAlester at at around 5 p.m. today.

Sirens could be heard blaring throughout McAlester just before heavy rain, lightning and strong winds blanketed the town. At around 5:30, sparce pieces of hail the size of half-dollar coins were hitting drivers' windshields and could be seen lying on the ground. At about 5:45, hail was more continuous and was the size of dimes.

Director of Emergency Management for Pittsburg County and McAlester Trent Myers said that he had reports of high winds and lightning near the Tannehill Road area. "Then it started rotating," Myers said. "Then we had severe winds. We clocked the winds at Tannehill and coming through McAlester and it was steady all the way through at 73 miles per hour."

Myers said that there was definately rotation but he had no reports of a tornado touching down by 6 p.m. today.
