McAlester just got larger.
McAlester city councilors unanimously agreed Tuesday night to annex enough additional property into the city limits to include the Steven Taylor Industrial Park and the planned new service plaza on the Indian Nation Turnpike.
City councilors took the action when they met in regular session at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the Council Chambers at City Hall.
City Manager Pete Stasiak said after the meeting that the land annexed into city limits includes approximately 80 acres of Oklahoma Turnpike Authority property that’s the planned site of a new turnpike service plaza; approximately 380 acres of city-owned property at the industrial park, and approximately 10 acres belonging to Stipe Investments.
Stasiak said he planned to notify the Oklahoma Tax Commission of the annexation action on Wednesday.
The annexation is set to go into effect in 30 days, on Oct. 10.
Annexing the turnpike plaza property will allow the city to collect sales tax generated from the planned new travel plaza on the turnpike. Plans call for it to be constructed near the industrial park, south of the McAlester exit off the Indian Nation Turnpike onto U.S. Highway 270.

Accident closes intersection

The accident closed the intersection for less than an hour.
The jaws of life were used to remove one person who was hospitalized later reported in stable condition, according the McAlester police. Two others were treated at the scene and released.
