McAlester News-Capital embraces age of digital media.

— The McAlester News-Capital has embraced the age of digital media.

Under our new subscription plan, our print customers and digital customers now have full access to our website and e-edition.

“I’m excited about it,” Publisher Amy Johns said of the Total Access plan, which went into effect at the News-Capital on Aug. 1.

“It’s something we should have been doing 10 years ago, because we are not just a newspaper anymore. We are a multi-media company.”

For several years, the News-Capital has been offering news about McAlester, surrounding communities and national and global news on its website — at www.mcalesternews.com — as well as in the print edition. Then last year, we introduced our e-edition, which looks just like the print edition of the News-Capital but is in an electronic version.

Now, with Total Access, all three versions have been combined.

“With Total Access, our customers are now offered the News-Capital in any version available: Print, online, smart phone, tablet,” Johns said. Print subscribers, for instance, won’t miss an edition while traveling because they can simply access their subscription online from anywhere in the world.

Meanwhile, digital customers can access the e-edition and website without subscribing to the print edition.

And access to the website — which had been unlimited and free since its inception — has been limited to seven articles per month.

“This has been years in the making,” Johns said. “Our customers have been paying for the print edition for years and years and years. And there are thousands who do so.

“And there is no difference between our online version and print. The difference is in how our product is delivered.

“So now, those who get our online version will not longer be able to get it for free.”

The website will still offer breaking news articles for free — emergencies that affect our readers will be readily accessible at www.mcalesternews.com. Also offered free online at our website are our classified ads.

Johns said customers and new subscribers who have questions about any of the products may contact us at 918-423-1700 during business hours, five days a week.
