Wilburton schools go on lock-down; man arrested with pellet gun

McALESTER — A man has been taken into custody in connection with an incident that resulted in Wilburton Public Schools going on lock-down Friday.

Wilburton Assistant Police Chief Jeremie Green said that William Ivey, 71, of Wilburton, has been taken into custody in connection with the incident. He’s been booked on an initial complaint of possessing a firearm on school property, said Green.

Speaking with the News-Capital, Green said the schools remained on “soft lock-down” but the incident had ended with the arrest.

The matter began around 10:45 a.m. when police were contacted this morning and told that a man carrying a gun had been sighted near a school.

“We got a report of an individual walking in front of the elementary school with a rifle,” Green said.

In addition to Wilburton police, law enforcement officers responded from the Latimer County Sheriff’s Department, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol,  Eastern Oklahoma State College campus police and the Choctaw Nation Tribal Police , Green said.

They formed a perimeter around the school and checked buses, according to Green. Several officers went inside the school to make sure no intruder had entered, according to Green.

Police were able to identify the subject through a photo taken by an individual with a cell phone, he said.

When police saw the photo, they recognized Ivey. They located him inside a residence about two blocks from the school, said Green. Police made the arrest at 11:47 a.m.

Ivey said he had been carrying a pellet gun to the residence, where a friend of his lived, according to Green. Police said they had found no intention as of this morning that the man had intended any harm.

Formal charges were pending from the Latimer County District Attorney’s office, according to police.
