McALESTER — A McAlester man was shot at a home in Bache on Monday night, surviving an exchange of gunfire, police said Tuesday night.

Pittsburg County Sheriff’s Det. Tommy Lyons found Billy “B.J.” Thomason shot in a ditch near U.S. Highway 270 on Tuesday morning, just south of where Thomason allegedly entered J.D. Giacomo’s home and exchanged gunfire with him Monday night.

The Pittsburg County Sheriff’s Department received a call from Giacomo on Monday at about 11:30 p.m. saying he had shot a man who fired at him with a shotgun, Undersheriff Richard Bedford said Tuesday evening. Giacomo told police the man had unlawfully entered his home with Giacomo’s former girlfriend,

Giacomo told police he thought he saw someone in his back yard and grabbed a 44-caliber gun and went to check things out, Bedford said. When he returned, he said a man was hiding behind a partition wall in the home, Bedford said.

Investigators say the woman allegedly slipped through a dog door and let Thomason, armed with a shotgun, into Giacomo’s home, Bedford said. He said it is not known why the pair went into the home.

Giacomo told police Thomason fired at him and the shot hit a partition wall, the undersheriff said. Then Giacomo fired back, hitting Thomason, Bedford said.

Once Thomason was hit, Giacomo said the woman and Thomason fled on foot, the undersheriff said.

Thomason was found by officers investigating  the shooting in a ditch near Giacomo’s home. Bedford said it appeared a gunshot wound penetrated Thomason’s arm and entered his side.

Bedford said Thomason was admitted to St. John’s Hospital in Tulsa and was last reported to be awake and in stable condition.

Police are still looking for the woman.
