Betty Ruth Chavers

Betty Ruth Chavers, 52, of McAlester, died Sunday, Aug. 10, 2008, at McAlester Regional Health Center.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bishop Chapel of Memories with the Rev. James Crowson officiating. Burial will be at Oak Hill Cemetery in McAlester. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Bishop Funeral Service of McAlester.

Born May 14, 1956, in Fort Worth, Texas, she was the daughter of Tracy Leo Sr. and Patricia Ruth Rhodes Craig. She attended high school in Leedey and later in Vici, where she graduated in 1974.

She attended Southwestern Oklahoma State University in Weatherford, where she studied drafting and photography.

She married Benny Chavers on Nov. 21, 1984, in Hydro. She enjoyed attending her children’s school sport activities and school functions.

In 1991, she and her husband moved to the McAlester area from Hinton. She and her husband owned and operated Flame Co. Fire & Safety Equipment, where she was the office manager and salesperson.

She loved spending time outdoors, hunting and fishing and was an avid flower gardener. She also was a good cook and enjoyed spending time with her granddaughter.

Survivors include her husband, Benny Chavers, of the home; three daughters and son-in-law, Sabrina Chavers, of the home; Shantel and Matt Lucas, of McAlester, and Shayla Chavers, of the home; a son, Benson Chavers, of the home; a granddaughter, Nikki Lucas, and five brothers and two sisters, James A. Craig and wife, Binnie, of Elk City, Tracy Leo Craig Jr., of Leedey, Don Paul Houser, of Eufaula, Lou Hubaard, of Ardmore, Gene Denny and wife, Christy, Dallas, Karla Moody and husband, Rusty, of Arkansas, and Darrel Denny, Dallas.

Pallbearers will be Kenny DeGraffenried, Leslie Standstipher, Matt Lucas, Roy Allen, Rick Bray, Randy McGinnis, Scott Craig, and King Craig.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Tracy and Patricia Craig; her grandfather, Carl Gruaden Craig; an uncle, Bob Craig, and an aunt, Faye.
